Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. It is a non-invasive technique used to stimulate neurons in the brain using magnetic fields. In TMS, a coil is placed on the scalp, and a brief but strong current is passed through the coil, generating a magnetic field that penetrates the skull and stimulates the underlying brain tissue.

TMS is used in a variety of medical and research applications including treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders such as anxiety, migraine, post-traumatic stress disorder PTSD, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression.

It is also used to study brain function and to map the connections between different areas of the brain. TMS is considered a safe and painless procedure, and it is typically performed in a clinical or research setting by trained professionals.

TMS has undergone significant research in recent years. TMS supersedes electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) as it bypasses the skull and can be applied to specific areas of the brain. The process involves the application of a repetitive magnetic field to the superficial layers of the cerebral cortex. This induces small electric Eddy or Foucault currents at a local position with the cerebral cortex acting as a secondary coil. There is no need for patient anaesthesia or sedation and lower stimulus strengths produce a similar or better effect than ECT in a shorter timespan. The use of low frequency stimulation produces an inhibitory effect, while higher frequencies perform excitatory stimulation, so increasing or decreasing neuronal excitation over the long-term. Remission of mood and neurological disorders and a decrease in suicidal tendencies are proven with little (scalp discomfort during treatment) to no side-effects. Zone Medical is proud to supply the ATES Medical STM 9000 TMS to certified neurologists, psychologists and cognitive neuroscience researchers. ATES is a manufacturer and distributor of medical devices, specialized in the fields of cardiology and neurology. The ATES STM 9000 repetitive TMS machine is ISO9001 and ISO13485 certified plus has TGA approval and available at Zone Medical in three models: Standard, Fast and Ultrafast.
