Spirometry is a medical test that measures the amount of air a person can breathe in and out of their lungs and how quickly they can do so. It is commonly used to diagnose and monitor respiratory conditions, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary fibrosis.
During a spirometry test, the patient is asked to take a deep breath and then blow out as much air as possible into a handheld device called a spirometer. The spirometer records the volume of air exhaled and the rate at which it was exhaled.
The test is typically repeated several times to ensure accurate results. The patient may also be asked to inhale a medication called a bronchodilator before repeating the test to see if it improves lung function.
Spirometry can help diagnose respiratory conditions, assess the severity of the condition, and monitor the effectiveness of treatment. It is a non-invasive, safe, and relatively simple procedure that can be performed in a doctor’s office or clinic.
